Zobrist hash ("XOR MACs")

U.S. patent 5673318, from Mihir Bellare, Roch Guérin, Phillip Rogaway, is on the "new" message-authentication code that they published in "XOR MACs: new methods for message authentication using finite pseudorandom functions", Crypto 1995. This message-authentication code is

• the 1970 Zobrist hash function, without credit, plus

• the (already standard in 1995) use of PRFs to simulate randomness, plus

• the (also standard in 1995) use of hashes as MACs.
